gynecologists review - your gyno and you ·

gynecologist review  gynecologist review 19

how old are you, and for how long have you been seeing your gynecologist?:  24, been to my current gyno for 2 years.

how did you find your first gynecologist? did your mother talk to you about it; did she take you to see hers?:  I told my mom I thought I should go since I was sexually active. I was 17 and went to my mom's gyno.

do you feel comfortable to ask questions about your body, what you are experiencing, to discuss your sex-life?:   I felt pretty comfortable, although discussing my sex life was kind of embarrassing because I worried she might be judging me.

how often do you see your gynecologist? what does a regular exam consist of?:   I go once a year, more if I have an infection. I usually just get examined with the speculum holding me open and they do a pap test. They also feel my breasts. That's it.

would you recommend your gynecologist - why, or why not?:   Not really. She's fine, but she doesn't take as much time with me as I would like and I feel a bit dismissed by her. I plan to go to a nurse midwife when I have kids because I think I'll get more attention and compasion.

what are all the factors that go into how you feel about your experience with your gyno? does the reception and nursing staff play a role? is there good reading material in the waiting room?:   I want someone gentle, kind, understanding, intelligent and who takes time to answer my questions. The reception staff and nursing staff do play a role. They are often very rude here in NY (not nurses, but receptionists). If they are friendly, it really helps. The waiting room has almost no reading material and I hate that. I like to have lots of magazines.

is there something more you'd like to be getting from your gynecologist that you aren't?:   More time and concern.

have you been treated for a disease or disorder? what was it? was it easily diagnosed? what treatment was prescribed, and was it successful?: Yes, I've had chronic yeast infections, chronic bacterial vaginosis, and chronic UTIs. Basically, the antibiotics from the chronic UTI's led to the other infections. I started always peeing after sex and drinking tons of water and (most importantly) stopped using spermicide, which had nononoxyl 9 and was causing UTIs. I had to do long term treatment for the infections with nystatin and boric acid and do a special diet for awhile too. Also, I now get allergy shots which include candida and help my body learn to fight it off. I also developed vulvar vestibulitis (painful sex at the vaginal opening) as a result of all these infections. I was treated with dilators, estrogen cream, numbing cream, and kegal excercises with biofeedback. I'm now doing great but it was a hard depressing couple of years there.

this conversation makes me think.... I've been through a lot and I'm grateful for my loving husband through it all.
