normal is diverse
How you are is how you’re supposed to be. There is no other way.
Over the course of ten years, Alexandra Jacoby photographed over 100 vagina portraits. The project began when a friend asked her if she liked the way her vagina looked. Jacoby, angry that her friend believed there was something wrong with hers, responded with vagina vérité, an unabashed exploration of the plain, ordinary, mysterious matter of vaginas: documentary-style vagina portraits.
Shot from the point of view reserved for gynecologists and lovers (sometimes), vagina vérité is a collective mirror of our individuality. There were no stylists, no details about the model to set the mood for fantasy or to objectify us—just the everyday vagina in plain view. Each strikingly unique. This is the first time that vagina vérité has been exhibited since 2009. The normal is diverse exhibition is in inquiry into individual and collective beliefs about what is normal.
